Introducing VAST or Viewer Access Satellite Television.
One of the Australian Government’s objectives in the switch to digital TV is to address, as much as possible, long-standing issues in regional and remote areas of Australia where residents have poor, or in some cases, no access to terrestrially broadcast TV services.

The VAST service is a first class direct-to-home digital TV satellite service which covers all of Australia. For the first time, viewers who cannot receive digital services from the terrestrial transmitters that serve their area will have access to a reliable free-to-air satellite TV service which delivers a range of digital channels.

The majority of Australians receive their TV services from the network of broadcaster-owned transmission towers. However, for those who live outside the coverage of this terrestrial network, a new satellite TV service is available to ensure that they are able to enjoy the same benefits of digital television as other Australians.

The Australian Government is investing $375.4 million to provide transmission of digital free-to-air TV services from the new satellite platform known as the VAST service. The establishment of the VAST service aims to ensure that anyone in Australia that cannot receive digital terrestrial services has immediate access to a reliable and professionally operated free-to-air service now and into the future.

The VAST service will also be available to people who currently rely on community-run ‘self-help’ transmitters that are not being converted to digital by commercial broadcasters and who are not able to receive an adequate digital signal from another transmitter site serving their area. Some households that rely on these services, and are not being converted, may be eligible for the Satellite Subsidy Scheme. For more information about the subsidy refer to the Satellite Subsidy Scheme link under ‘related information’.

The VAST service commenced on 15 December 2010 and will be progressively made available in all parts of Australia as they switch to digital TV. Viewers will be able to access the commercial channels of the VAST service about six months before the switch to digital TV in their area. The channels of the national broadcasters, ABC and SBS, are available without restriction. Regional areas that have already switched to digital-only TV and remote areas of Australia have access to the VAST service now.

It is difficult to estimate exactly how many viewers will need to receive the new satellite service, but it may potentially benefit up to 247,000 households across Australia. Many of these households already rely on satellite reception for their TV, such as the Aurora service, and for the first time, all Australians will have access to the same number of channels that are available in capital cities.

About The VAST Set-Top-Box

As of August 2011, there is only one VAST certified set-top box available in the market. This is manufactured by Altech UEC and is available to buy from Blue Mountains TV Antennas.

The reason is very simple.

The Analog Channels are:

• 2 for ABC
• 7 for Channel 7
• 9 for Channel 9
• 10 for Channel 10
• and then 28 for SBS

• 6 for Channel 7
• 8 for Channel 9
• 11 for Channel 10
• 12 for ABC
• and 34 for SBS

An older TV antenna was designed to receive Channels 1 through to 10, and channels 11 through to 27 are “tuned out” of the antenna’s reception capability so that you do not get interference from radios such as Police, Fire, Ambulances, CB Radio, etc. which operate in the frequencies between channel 11 and 27.

Some re-arranging was done and what you have is a nice neat TV spectrum of Channels 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and then way out there is SBS on channel 34.

What this means for you is that your antenna is the wrong physical shape to receive digital TV…. and, you may need a replacement. Sometimes, the problem may be caused by other components in your TV system such as the wrong type of cable, splitters, dis-combobulators or other such gadgets. Our test equipment has the capability to identify which part of your antenna system is not compatible with Digital TV reception and we will give you all the options available to get you up and running.

You may have seen the latest advertising campaign from the Government about this, but how do you know if your Antenna is “Digital Ready”?

If you are buying a new TV or set top box, the Australian Government has developed labels to help you choose the option that is right for you. Look out for these labels at your local electronics retailer.

This is usually a signal problem which can be caused by a number of things, the most common being:

• A bad flylead from the wall socket to the TV (You need an RG6 Quad Flylead for digital TV, check our Online Store
• No signal getting from the antenna to the wall plate, waterlogged cable or bad connections
• Rusty connections on the antenna or bad antenna alignment will also prevent any signal getting through.

Digital TV requires PERFECT cabling, connections and signal. Analog tv was very forgiving when you had bad cabling due to the RF signals being able to jump across any bad connections and still give a picture, even if it was really bad quality.

Digital TV sends it’s signal along the outer metal surface of the cable, where rust builds up. It is a digital signal so it cannot electromagnetically jump across any bad connections. In other words, the metal has to touch or you won’t get a signal.

We have the equipment to test this exact kind of problem. A faulty cable that could take you HOURS to find, literally takes us a few seconds with the proper gear.

Some possible causes for bad SBS reception are:

• Having an antenna with no UHF compatibility, ie. Too old, or VHF only.
• Masthead amplifier UHF section has stopped working, blown up.
• Rusted or waterlogged connections
• Interference

When will Analog TV be turned off?

The process will commence in 2010 in Mildura and will be completed in 2013 in Sydney.

The choices are many, The most cost effective and best bang for buck are LCD Televisions.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

When LCDs first became available, they were considered inferior to Plasma Televisions, due to the slow response times of Liquid Crystal Displays. This often resulted in a blurry picture when fast moving images were displayed on the screen. The good news is that over the past few years, these have dramatically improved and they are generally better in quality than a Plasma screen, AND as an extra bonus they are now MUCH cheaper than they used to be.

Plasma Screen TVs.

These were the original “Flat Screen To Have” and they just have a cool name – Plasma. They were expensive, power hungry, but if you wanted a large Flat Television, then this was the best one to buy. Although they are still available and have come down in price dramatically, their performance is generally about the same as a LCD television.

LED Televisions

LED is the latest technology available in flat screen TVs. Instead of using a gas plasma or a Liquid Crystal to display the image, they use millions of LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes. LEDs have been used widely in electronics for a long time, but the technology to manufacture them into a compact flat display screen has only just recently become available. The image is made up from millions of miniature LED lights set up in sets of the 3 as Red, Green and Blue. LED TVs are generally about half the thickness of the other 2 types of television screens, and the picture quality is superior in every way to LCD and Plasma screens. This is THE TV to have if you intend on hanging it on the wall like a picture. Go and check them out at your local appliance retailer to see the difference!

Not all brands are the same!!!

Some noteworthy brands to consider buying are:

LG

There are many others on the market and if you do a little research on them, you will discover that most of the cheaper ones actually come out of the same factory as each other.
To test this, pick up the remote control while your in the shop and press the MENU button. If the menu appears the same as a few other brands in the shop, you can pretty much guarantee that it came out of the same factory as the other “cheapies”.

While they offer good bang for buck, I have seen a lot of these cheaper ones blown up or doing weird things after a few years.

Spend the extra money and buy a good one so you can enjoy it more!

One more thing to consider is this. When the salesman offers to sell you a surge protector for your new TV, he is not trying to take more money off you!
LCD, LED and Plasma TV’s need a surge protector. They are very delicate, and I have seen MANY un-protected ones get coloured stripes across or down the screen after a small power spike or thunderstorm.
